The Charm of Matcha Tea: Episode 2
Share the Warmth of Matcha: Health Benefits, Tools, and Recipes
Dear UR Happy Place Family,
As January's cold winds sweep past our windows, my area has seen heavy snowfall. Meanwhile, my heart grows heavy thinking of families affected by the wildfires in the West. While sending my quiet prayers their way, I'd like to share a story of warmth through a cup of tea with you today.
🫖 The Warmth Tea Brings to Our Hearts
Even as the world races forward, we still need each other's warmth. During those brief moments of preparing a cup of matcha, we can catch our breath and soothe our hearts whether alone or shared with someone, a cup of tea becomes our little sanctuary in daily life.
Perhaps today, some of you need that moment to pause with a cup of tea. When feeling alone, try sending a short message to a loved one while enjoying your warm tea. Missing a familiar voice? Why not make a call to someone dear while sharing a virtual cup together?

The Art of Drinking Matcha Matcha is more than just a beverage; it's an experience of mindful reflection. Here are tips to enrich your matcha experience:
Mind the Temperature: Matcha prefers slightly cooled water (70-80°C/158-176°F). .
Proper Portions: Use about 1-2g of matcha powder - too much can make it overly bitter.
Savor Slowly: Take time to appreciate the aroma and taste.
Essential Tools for Enjoying Matcha Fragrantly
Chawan (Matcha Bowl): Designed with a wide and shallow shape to effectively whisk the matcha, these bowls are crafted by artisans and feature natural glazes that reflect the traditional beauty of Japan.
Chasen (Bamboo Whisk): Made from high-quality bamboo with at least 80 delicate prongs, the chasen creates a fine froth.
Chashaku (Bamboo Scoop): A thin, curved scoop that allows precise measurement of matcha powder.
Sifter: Used to ensure a lump-free, smooth matcha consistency.
Kusenaoshi (Whisk Holder): Helps maintain the shape and longevity of the chasen's prongs.

Optional Add-ons
Matcha Storage Container: Airtight containers protect matcha from light and moisture.
Tea Cloth (Chakin): Used to wipe the bowl during tea ceremonies.
The Beauty and Function of the Bamboo Whisk
One of the most essential tools for preparing matcha is the bamboo whisk (chasen). It is designed to seamlessly mix fine matcha powder with water, creating a smooth and creamy texture.
Background of the Chasen
Origin: The chasen is deeply rooted in Japanese tea culture, where aesthetics and the use of natural materials play a key role. Bamboo's flexibility and durability make it the perfect material for this tool.
Craftsmanship: Made by carefully carving a single piece of bamboo, the chasen is refined by artisans into approximately 100 thin prongs. Each whisk is not just a tool but a work of art.
How to Use a Chasen
Soften the Whisk: Before use, soak the chasen in warm water to prevent it from breaking.
Prepare Matcha: Sift 1–2g of matcha powder into a bowl.
Add Water: Pour a small amount of water heated to 70–80°C (158–176°F) to dissolve the powder.
Whisk: Using the chasen, whisk in a quick M- or W-motion to create a light, frothy texture. The key is to whisk with the right speed and consistency.
Finish: Add more water to adjust the strength and enjoy.
Tip: If a chasen is unavailable, an electronic whisk can also work.
Matcha and Health: A Small Goal for the New Year
This New Year, my husband and I set a simple goal: to share a cup of matcha every day. With his high cholesterol levels, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial. Research suggests that matcha, rich in antioxidants and catechins, may help reduce cholesterol levels.
Health Benefits of Matcha
Cholesterol Management: Catechins in matcha are known to lower LDL cholesterol.
Heart Health: Antioxidants promote vascular health and may prevent heart disease.
Energy & Focus: The combination of caffeine and L-theanine provides gentle energy and improved focus.
Sharing a daily cup of matcha becomes not just a healthy habit but also a meaningful moment for conversation and connection.
